چکیده

The problem of scale in shape from texture is addressed. The need for (at least) two scale parameters is emphasized; a local scale describing the amount of smoothing used for suppressing noise and irrelevant details when computing primitive texture descriptors from image data, and an integration scale describing the size of the region in space over which the statistics of the local descriptors is accumulated. A novel mechanism for automatic scale selection is proposed, based on normalized derivatives. It is used for adaptive determination of the two scale parameters in a multi-scale texture descriptor, the windowed second moment matrix, which is de ned in terms of Gaussian smoothing, rst order derivatives, and non-linear pointwise combinations of these. The same scale-selection method can be used for multi-scale blob detection without any tuning parameters or thresholding. The resulting texture description can be combined with various assumptions about surface texture in order to estimate local surface orientation. Two speci c assumptions, \weak isotropy" and \constant area", are explored in more detail. Experiments on real and synthetic reference data with known geometry demonstrate the viability of the approach.

Shape From Texture: Integrating Texture-Element Extraction and Surface Estimation

A perspective view of a slanted textured surface shows systematic changes in the density, area, and aspect-ratio of texture elements. These apparent changes in texture element properties can be analyzed to recover information about the physical layout of the scene. However, in practice it is difficult to identify texture elements, especially in images where the texture elements are partially oc...

Adaptive Scale Filtering: A General Method for Obtaining Shape From Texture

We introduce adaptive scale ltering, a general method for deriving shape from texture under perspective projection without recourse to prior segmentation of the image into geometric texture elements (texels), and without thresholding of ltered images. If texels on a given surface can be identiied in an image then the orientation of that surface can be obtained 11]. However, there is no general ...

Shape from Texture through Deformations

This paper is a contribution to the recovery of shape from texture under perspective projection. We regard shape from texture as a statistical estimation problem, the texture being the realization of a stochastic process. There are two minimal conditions in order for the problem to be solvable: the first is a stationarity condition on the texture with respect to the surface; the second is the r...

Shape-adapted smoothing in estimation of 3-D shape cues from affine deformations of local 2-D brightness structure

This article describes a method for reducing the shape distortions due to scale-space smoothing that arise in the computation of 3-D shape cues using operators (derivatives) defined from scale-space representation. More precisely, we are concerned with a general class of methods for deriving 3-D shape cues from a 2-D image data based on the estimation of locally linearized deformations of brigh...

Vein Texture Extraction using the Multiscale Second- Order Differential Model

In order to analyze the back of hand vein pattern rapidly and effectively, a novel approach based on multi-scale second-order differential model is proposed to extract the vein texture from vein samples directly, which is made up of two section: one is the foundation of local second-order differential model of vein texture (VLSDM), the other is texture extraction based on the multi-scale VLSDM....
